Sweden 2019

Saturday 13th July – Saturday 20th July 2019

Open to those in Yr 8 (13yrs old)  to Yr10, the ESOC Sweden Expedition is an epic canoe journey down Lake Stora Le, an extensive body of water in the Swedish Lake District. The scenery is stunning and the clear water of the lake is punctuated with small rocky islands where we can camp. As we journey down the lake we will have the opportunity to teach a variety of bushcraft and survival skills and on the last day participants can choose to take part in a 24hr Survival exercise.

Overview

During the trip the expedition members work in small teams called Fires, which are each supervised by one of the ESOC instructors. They will shop, cook and paddle together but will also see a lot of those in other Fires.

For the first 2 nights the group will camp at the canoe base in Ed while we prepare for the expedition. As we paddle between the islands the pupils will sleep in hammocks under tarp shelters. Cooking will be done over group campfires throughout the trip.

There are composting style toilets at each of the sites we camp at. Washing is done by collecting water from the lake and warming it over the fire.

Canoeing

We will be hiring canoes, paddles, watertight barrels, and buoyancy aids from Canodal, a well established canoe outfitter near the small town of Ed. We will camp here on the first two nights and on our return from the canoe journey. Canodal also hires out kayaks which we will use to run BCU 2* assessments on the first day.

For the journey itself we will be using a mixture of 2 and 3 person aluminium canoes ideally suited to long journeys. They can carry a large amount of food and equipment and are comfortable to paddle for long periods. When the wind conditions are right, we will be able to raft them together and hoist an improvised sail to save ourselves some paddling!

Bushcraft

As we progress along the lake we will teach the students a range of Bushcraft skills including:

  • Firelighting (including friction methods)
  • Search and Rescue Techniques
  • Shelter Building
  • Natural Cordage
  • Knife, saw and axe safety
  • Wild Food
  • Water Purification

Those who are keen can choose to undertake a 24hr survival exercise at the end of the trip to test out their new skills and general resilience.

“Jonny loved the Kayak trip to Sweden last month – so much so that he and the rest of the group, plus a few additions, are proposing that they do some kind of expedition next year, immediately after GCSE’s. I believe they are thinking of something water based again.”
