Sweden 2017 - Family Expedition

Monday 24th July – Monday 31st July 2017

Our Sweden Expedition is a canoe journey down Lake Stora Le, an extensive body of water in the Swedish Lake District. The scenery is stunning and the clear water of the lake is punctuated with small rocky islands where we can camp. We have run this trip many times with teenagers and now we would like to open it to families. As we journey down the lake we will have the opportunity to teach a variety of bushcraft and survival skills and each family will be guided throughout the trip on both land and water by experienced leaders. Our recommended minimum age for this trip is 7yrs old but no further skill or experience will be required. The video below shows our last Summit Team trip to give an idea of the environment.

Overview

Having arrived in Sweden we will spend the first 2 nights camping at the canoe base while we prepare for the expedition. On the journey itself we will sleep in hammocks under tarp shelters or tents. Cooking will be done over campfires throughout the trip. The exact schedule is determined by the weather but there is usually plenty of time for swimming, fishing and relaxing by the fire.

There are composting style toilets on each of the islands we camp on. Washing is done by collecting water from the lake and warming it over the fire.

Canoeing

We will be hiring canoes, paddles, watertight barrels, and buoyancy aids from Canodal, a well established canoe outfitter near the small town of Ed. We will camp here on the first two nights and on our return from the canoe journey.

For the journey itself we will be using a mixture of 2 and 3 person aluminium canoes ideally suited to long journeys. They can carry a large amount of food and equipment and are comfortable to paddle for long periods. When the wind conditions are right, we will be able to raft them together and hoist an improvised sail to save ourselves some paddling! We will coach paddling technique and teach basic capsize and rescue drills.

How the canoes are arranged will be determined by the number in each family. Two adults could take a younger child with them in the same boat or take two older children in two boats. There will be at least one leader looking after each group of 8 individuals.
