The Night Spinner Expedition

Tuesday 30th May (pm) to Friday 2nd June (pm)

**We are now fully booked for girls this trip, but please fill out the form if you’d like to be added to the waiting list**

The Night Spinner is the third and final book in the hugely successful Dreamsnatcher trilogy and chronicles the adventures of Moll, Sid and Gryff as they battle the dreaded Shadowmasks and search for the final Amulet of Truth in the Scottish highlands.

The Exploration Society is delighted to offer fans of the story a chance to live the adventure during the May half term. Starting with a journey to Inverness on the sleeper train, our group will get to ride highland ponies, hike on the moors, visit ancient castles and canoe and fish on the rivers leading into Loch Ness (watching out for monsters!). This trip is open to those in Yr 4 – Yr 8

Travel and Accomodation

We will meet at London Euston at 8pm on Tuesday 30th May and board the Caledonian Sleeper heading to Inverness. We have booked twelve twin cabins in our own carriage so should have a comfortable journey overnight and will wake up in the mountains!

From Inverness we head a short distance by public bus to our accommodation in Lewiston on the Western shore of Loch Ness. This converted barn is now a cosy bunkhouse with dormitories and communal areas and within easy walking distance of the Historic Urquhart Castle and the local stables.

After an early start on Friday 2nd June we will travel back by train from Inverness, arriving at King’s Cross at by 4pm

Activities

On Wednesday the morning will be spent traveling to and settling into our accommodation. During the afternoon we will explore the local area including visiting the majestic Urquhart Castle overlooking the loch. The evening will be spent playing games and possibly even fishing if the weather is good but we will also have some indoor space if not.

Thursday will be a multi activity day with the group visiting the local stables to go pony trekking, canoeing on the rivers running down to Loch Ness and hiking to one of the nearby view points to watch the sunset.

At some point in the week we hope to organise a visit from Abi Elphinstone who will read to the children and answer any questions they have about the book. We will also ask her to judge a short story writing competition during the trip.

Safety and Leadership

The trip will be led by Tom Hodge, a native of Scotland who can speak the language almost fluently, and Christabel Davy, the Head of our Woodland Adventure programme. You can view their profiles here The ratio of leaders will be 1:5 students.

The horse riding will be led by the stable staff and assisted by Christabel who is also an experienced Horse rider. Tom and the other paddle sport instructors will lead the canoeing. Qualified mountain leaders will be in charge of any walking trips, and the routes will be chosen to be appropriate for the ages of the participants and the weather conditions.

Sleeper cabins on the trains will be single sex unless siblings wish to share and lockable from the inside. Leaders will sleep in a cabin nearby in case they are needed in the night.

We will endeavour to post daily photo blogs here to keep you updated on the progress of the trip. We will inform you directly of any travel delays or any serious issues concerning your child.
